Inspired by Janelle McCulloch’s One for the Road, we set out from foggy San Francisco in a little red Chevy to the dulcet tones of Sweet Home Alabama and American Pie. Fitting, huh? Our destination: Los Angeles by way of Big Sur and San Simeon. Our route: Pacific Coast Highway One. This drive is simply stunning. Once you’re clear of the eerily beautiful fog hugging the City by the Bay, you soon reach Carmel at the northern end of Big Sur and the beginning of one of the most spectacular stretches of coast I’ve ever seen. Clear water in myriad shades of blue, rocky cliffs right next to the road that drop straight into the Pacific Ocean, the iconic Bixby Creek Bridge and the dwarfing redwoods in Los Padres National Forest. This area offers photo-worthy scenery around every bend in the road. California dreaming.
